The City of Lakes welcomed us with its old-world charm, scenic beauty, and winding lanes perfect for exploring on a scooter. We immersed ourselves in its cultural and architectural richness, staying at a beautifully aesthetic hostel that set the tone for our laid-back yet adventurous getaway.
We kick-started our morning with some local delicacies at Jagdish Mishthan Bhandar, indulging in kachoris, poha, and tea. After this delicious start, we visited the famous Jagdish Temple, an ancient marvel in the heart of the city. Its intricate carvings and peaceful vibe made it the perfect way to begin our day.
With scooters rented, we zoomed through the narrow lanes, admiring colorful houses, old havelis, and catching glimpses of local life along the way. Our next stop was Fateh Sagar Lake, where the calm waters and scenic views invited us to pause and take it all in. From there, we headed to Saheliyon Ki Bari, a charming garden with fountains and lush greenery. Legend has it that the garden was built for royal women to unwind, and honestly, we could see why!
By lunchtime, we treated ourselves to Dal Baati Churma at a small local restaurant. It wasn’t fancy, but the soulful flavors were just what we needed to keep us going.
In the evening, we made our way to Lake Pichola for a serene boating experience. The golden hour reflected beautifully on the waters as the boats drifted past the famous City Palace and Taj Lake Palace. After the boat ride, we indulged in some local shopping, focusing on Bandhani textiles—known for their vibrant patterns and tie-dye techniques. Whether in the form of sarees, scarves, or stoles, these made perfect souvenirs to take a piece of Udaipur back with us.
Our day ended on a cultural high at Bagore Ki Haveli, where we attended a traditional dance and puppet show. The energy, music, and storytelling gave us a deeper appreciation of Rajasthan’s cultural heritage.
On the second day, we made our way to the iconic City Palace, an architectural marvel offering panoramic views of Udaipur’s lakes and the Aravalli Hills. Wandering through the palace felt like a journey through history, with every courtyard, room, and artifact telling a story of the Mewar dynasty. We roamed around the palace, clicked some beautiful pictures, listened to Rajasthani music, and tried on traditional clothes. By the end of the day, we enjoyed an amazing dinner of Gatte Ki Sabzi and other Rajasthani sides at a lakeside restaurant.
This Udaipur trip was the perfect small escape from our home state, designed to be light on the pocket while packed with beautiful experiences. Staying at an affordable yet aesthetic hostel, riding around the city on scooters, and enjoying simple but authentic meals kept things easy on the budget. Udaipur’s charm lies in the fact that you don’t need to splurge to make the most of it whether it’s the scenic lakes, historic sites, or vibrant local markets, everything here is accessible and enriching. For anyone looking for a short, pocket-friendly getaway, Udaipur is an absolute delight!
