This region is home to the Chettiar community, a small but wealthy and business-minded group similar to the Parsi community in Mumbai. The Chettiars were known as money lenders in earlier days, dating back to the Chola and Pandya eras. Chettinad is most famous for its Chicken Chettinad dish, but there is much more to try and experience.Being a wealthy community with large families, the Chettiars built their homes as grand mansions, with each pure Chettiar household typically occupying a minimum of 1 acre. These mansions are adorned with numerous artifacts, such as pillars and doors made of teakwood. Due to their business dealings in India and Southeast Asian countries like Burma, Singapore, and Malaysia, the Chettiars could easily import teakwood, as well as other materials like Carrara marble from Italy, Japanese glass, and English tiles. They used these materials to construct their impressive mansions. One village in the region is famous for its handmade tiles. These tiles are not made using any machines but are hand-painted and sun-dried, taking almost 10 days to complete one tile and 15 days during the monsoon season. Despite the low rainfall and hot climate, the artisans continue to create these beautiful tiles.
